What is a Doctor of Physical Therapy?

A Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) is the titled earned by Physical Therapists after completing their graduate degree. 212 out of 232 programs have already transitioned their programs to reflect the Doctorate level education. Physical Therapy programs are required to be DPT level by 2020. All Atlas Physical Therapists are Doctorate level.

The change in education requirements over the last 5-10 years is a reflection of the field of PT to become more autonomous. The doctorate level degree allows PT’s in most states to have direct access, where a patient can go straight to a PT without a need for a physician's referral. Direct access allows patients to be seen sooner and therefore get back to pain free activities sooner.

In addition to direct access, the field of PT has become more evidence based. Countless hours and energy has been put into research to validate the things we do in rehabilitation. This means faster recovery and improved results with physical therapy.

Let Atlas Physical Therapy be your first call when injuries occur!
